Vintage Clothes and Generational Faith

Recently I was asked to host our online Sunday morning church service.  I host with a man named Clay. I mentioned to him, as we were talking, that I was wearing a sweater that I have had for at least 30 years! (What? Who does that? Who wears a 30-year-old sweater to church. Me. Because it’s Ralph Lauren and seemed worth hanging on to. Plus, I had a new Zara skirt that worked perfectly with it.)

Then, to my surprise, he confessed that he was wearing an early 90’s Structure shirt. (What? Who saves a Structure shirt? And wears it? To church? Clay does. Because it still fit and looked great!)

After a laugh because here we stood on camera, both in vintage clothes, we decided to not waste the “vintage” moment, so we talked about the importance of generational faith and passing down what we know and value to the next generation, like a good sweater or shirt.

Later, as I watched six teenagers lead worship, I realized I was witnessing handing down generational faith play out. Three of the teens leading worship that day had grandparents in the audience. I served at our local church with them for many years. Better than a sweater or a shirt, those grandparents passed down their faith to their children and their children’s children and I was seeing it lived out that day.

Friends, I know we talk about generational faith a lot, but it doesn’t get any better than that! I love watching my own grandchildren live their lives for God and I love watching the grandchildren of my friends do the same. Some of the teens on that stage, belting out worship songs, had walked through some difficult days, as teens do. But, by God’s grace and the love of their parents and grandparents, they are walking in the truth of who they are and who they belong to. Never give up. Your kids are too important for you to give up on them. Keep showing them the way.

Hugs, Chrys
