Lipstick and Face Masks—Can They Live in Harmony?

This really is the question for 2020, isn’t it? Can I or should I or do I need to wear lipstick under my facemask?

I’m going to level with you, my lips have no color. Zero. Nada. None. I wish I had the rosy red lips my granddaughters have, but rosy lips just weren’t in my card deck.

You see, I am a spring. Don’t know what a spring is? Well, many years ago, I was a color consultant. Yes, it was a thing. Apparently, it still is but it had its heyday (most powerful) in the 80’s, I think. I was with a company called Beauty for All Seasons. The idea is to look at your skin tone, eyes and hair color to determine what season you are. Summer, Autumn, Winter or Spring are the names of the different types of coloring. Each of these season names comes with the colors that is best suited for that seasons skin tone, eyes, etc. Basically, summer and winter coloring is cool and spring and autumn are warm.

That’s a short explanation, now back to my lips. Springs typically have the same coloring all over. Their hair matches their face, their face matches their lips. Hence, lips don’t have much color. Another hence, a spring needs to wear bright colors to brighten their face up. My best colors are coral, turquoise, army green, gold, tan….you get the picture. Warm, some bolder than others, but warm colors work great for me.

Again, back to lipstick. I have to have color on my lips. I know, it’s kind of a southern thing to wear lipstick, but I think if I lived in the north, I would have discovered this truth-I NEED lipstick. Even at a young age, I used to say if I got trapped on a desert island I would asked for lipstick and mascara (another story).

Now, with this mask situation, you would think I would be thrilled that no one could see my lips, but here’s the reality of mask wearing—they come off. If we’re eating out, we can take them off. If we’re six feet away from someone, we can take them off. If we are at the dentist, we can take them off. So, in an effort to not frighten whoever I’m talking to, lipstick will be on under my mask.

So, how do I keep my lipstick on while wearing a mask? How do I keep my mask from being colored pink, coral or orange? I have discovered Maybelline 24 Hour lipstick. It’s awesome. Does it last 24 hours? No, not on me. But, it lasts for a long time. I would say four or five hours for sure. There are lots of colors so finding one in your color palette is easy. Again, I’m a spring so I look for warm colors. Also, the color is on one end and a gloss on the other. You can apply the gloss all day long if you want and who doesn’t? It feels great and puts a nice shine on your lips.

Here’s what it looks like and here’s a link if you don’t want to go to a store. If you are out and about, you can find it in any store. They run about $7.50, depending on the store.  I hope this helps you with one of life’s little dilemmas in the middle of many huge ones. Keep rocking.

Hugs, Chrys
