Sinks, Faucets & God’s Will
I was sick for about five days this summer. Really sick. Like high fever sick. At one point I got up to brush my teeth because we all had moms who told us we would feel better if we brushed our teeth. Right? (Hair was included in that conversation too.) Anyway, I stood over the sink, feeling a little wobbly, and looked down to notice the faucet wasn’t centered over the sink. (Yes, our bathroom faucets swivel, which sounded good at the time I bought them.) I knew I needed to take quick action and move the faucet over an inch to the center or I would soon be cleaning up a floor covered in water. Instead, in my wobbly, sick state, I tried to move the sink! What? Yes, I tried to move the sink over a few inches. Please, keep in mind I was sick, unless you think I’ve lost my ever-loving mind. (Excuse the southern term.)
Well, you know me. A life lesson quickly followed. How often do know we need to make a change to avoid complete disaster, but we expend all our energy on a part of the problem that really isn’t the problem at all? In other words, the solution isn’t what we want to change or address, so, we polish it or shine it or dance around it or ignore it and nothing gets changed.
It’s been said that one of the most difficult things for humans to do is change. It’s not that we don’t want to change; just listen to the New Year’s Resolutions of your friends. Humans want to change, but implementing a change is way harder than wishing it were done. The only way to truly make changes is to allow God into the situation you are wanting to change. And that requires you be honest with God about which thing or things need changing. It’s not you trying to move the sink; it’s letting God help you move the faucet.
I love Ephesians 5, around verse 15. This is in the Message, but the love how it challenges us. It says, “Watch your step. Use your head. Make the most of every chance you get. These are desperate times! Don’t live carelessly, unthinkingly. Make sure you understand what the Master wants.”
I love that! The responsibility to make changes in our life for the better is on us, but God will be with us as we pursue those changes. If you’ve been “playing” with change in an area, today might be a good day to address it head on and take the good Lord with you.
Have a blessed week,
Hugs, Chrys
