Your Quirk or Mine?
The Fourth of July is right around the corner and it is hands-down one of our favorite family holidays! We don’t just party on The Fourth. Our bunch has a tradition of celebrating the first full week of July together. In recent years, this full out party has followed Keggie Kamp. This year Kamp will follow the party. You may read that as your happy hostess writing these words will be one tired Grandmother come May 8th or 9th Lol! (If you’re interested, I’ve written more about Kamp here, https://rockingitgrand.com/grand-kamp/) I want to use this space to broach a subject we haven’t really covered much here at Rocking it Grand. Let’s take a quick look at the expectations of family gatherings, and how to prepare ourselves and our family members with a bit of a reality dose. I personally think this one needs remedial attention.
Family get togethers can be absolutely wonderful.
Family members can rub each other the wrong way.
Both of these things are often true at the same time.
It’s worth reminding ourselves, and our people, that everyone who comes to the gathering will have his or her own personality and different personalities can and will create conflict unless everyone is prepared to offer grace in the space. What would be news-worthy would be if every minute of our reunions were always movie worthy and we never disagreed. This is not my experience. It’s why it behooves us to acknowledge that we have similarities and differences and be ready with a game plan! My goal, and the goal I put before my kids and grands is to acknowledge that we all have our own little quirks. If we refuse to camp on others, we may just find them giving us grace for ours.
Happy Summer!
