Upholstery Fun!

Have you ever looked at a piece of furniture and wanted to change it up with some new fabric but were a little intimidated? I have. But, I got brave several years ago and learned that some simple jobs are simpler than I thought.

First of all, examine that piece of furniture in question. If it has clearly straight lines, you are good to go. I recently redid a laundry hamper I had in the bathroom. When I redid the bathroom, it no longer matched, yet it was still a good hamper. It just needed a new fabric top on it. So, I measured the top and headed to Hobby Lobby. It only required one half of a yard of fabric, which I suspected, so even if the fabric is fairly expensive (around $18.00 a yard), the cost of the project is not much at all.

I’m going to walk you through the steps with pictures so you can see how easy it is to do.

  1. Get your supplies ready. Fabric, scissors, and a staple gun. Check your staple gun before you head to the store to be sure you have plenty of staples. It’s super frustrating to be all ready to go and not have enough staples.
  2. Remove the hinges from the back of the lid. A screwdriver will work for this job, but if you have a drill that works too. Just be sure the drill is set to remove, not make the screws tighter.
  3. Once the screws are out, take the piece off that you are working on and place it on a flat surface.
  4. Spread the new fabric under the piece you’re working on and cut it to fold over the edges at least 2 inches.
  5. Then it’s time to staple. For this piece I didn’t fold the edges under because I was going to cover over the edges as you will see in the next pic.
  6. Take another piece of fabric and cut it to lay on the underside of the lid, with the right side up. Leave enough to fold the edges under so you don’t have any edges to fray.
  7. Staple it all down as neatly as possible.
  8. Replace the lid using the screws you took off or use new ones if those are rusted (mine were).
  9. Place it in the bathroom or wherever and ENJOY!

I hope this wasn’t too confusing. You can do this technique with a chair, a hamper, a headboard for your bed, a trunk—anything! It quick and easy. Just get a good staple gun and let the fun begin!

Hugs, Chrys
