The Moon is Always Round by Jonathan Gibson

Sometimes God, in His sovereignty, grants to one of our fellow pilgrims the ability to illustrate a deep and profound truth in such a relatable way that the impact stays with us long after the conversation, movie, or book ends. Such is the children’s book recently released by author Jonathan Gibson. It bears a message you’ll want your children and grands to cherish for generations to come.

I interviewed Jonathan on my All Things Southern podcast, to discuss The Moon is Always Round, his first children’s book.  Should you follow the links to iTunes, Google Play, Spotify or listen through the audio link at my website, prepare yourself for a strange juxtaposition of accents. My north Louisiana twang meets the refined beauty of my guest’s native Belfast, Northern Ireland accent in something of a cultural explosion, but stay with us. I’m convinced you’ll fall in love with Jonathan and the message of his book as surely as I have.

The Moon is Always Round was born out of the tragedy that struck Jonathan’s family when his wife Jackie gave birth to their second child, the beautifully formed and peaceful Layla, stillborn at 39 weeks. In the face of their own grief, Jonathan and Jackie found themselves trying to help their three-year-old son Ben, who had so anticipated his little sister’s birth, to understand why Baby Layla wouldn’t be coming home with them. How could they help Ben wrestle with this loss in a way that didn’t create lasting suspicion in his heart that maybe God wasn’t so good after all? This is the backstory for “The Moon is Always Round”. As the sweetly illustrated pages turn, Jonathan helps us all to see that, “Just as the moon is always round, even when we can’t see the whole moon, God is always good, even when in difficult times when we can’t see all of his goodness.”

If you’ve ever wondered how to even begin explaining why bad things happen to good people to a “little” one. Better yet, should you need fresh supplies of spiritual oxygen for your own faith in the face of hard and ugly— pick this little book up as soon as you can. I’m going to be buying a carton to pass out not only to my grands, but to big people like me who would appreciate this endearing and enduring reminder.

Yes. It’s that good. Drop us a private email if you’re going through a hard

time. Chrys and I would be honored to pray for you! Or leave your message below and let this community share your burden.  We want Rocking it Grand to become a place of healing, refuge, and resources for you along the way.
