That’s My Grandbaby

Oh, Rockstars! 2020 just keeps coming up with ways to raise the stress. Amen? I think this calls for some humor relief of the grand kind! And I have just the story!

Today’s most embarrassing moment was told to me by someone who never really said I couldn’t repeat it, but we’ll give her a good double southern name to be safe. Meet Emma Kate and join me in our story.

Emma Kate had been holding down the hospital waiting room all day when the big news came. Her first grandchild had arrived! Within minutes her son-in-law had brought the wee one out for super quick peek and whisked the baby boy right back off to this mother’s waiting arms.

Emma Kate accepted the temporary separation like a champ. Sorta. She had texted everyone she knew, updated her social media status, and was pacing outside the nursery when the door opened, and a nurse rolled a bassinet into the room. Emma Kate hurried to the viewing glass. Oh, he was perfect! Our new grandmother raised her iPhone to take that first all-important picture. But, wait, what was this? To Emma Kate’s surprise another woman stepped in the way! The quiet stranger began oohing and ahhing over Emma Kate’s new grand, too, which was cool, but Emma Kate didn’t appreciate how she planted herself in front of the bassinet and refused to budge.

Emma Kate tried sending her some polite signals.  It didn’t help.

My friend decided the shy stranger was either slow witted or stubborn, or both. She isn’t proud of this, but Emma Kate said she actually had to elbow the woman in the ribs before the lady would give an inch!  After that, Emma Kate saw the woman march to the nurse’s station, and she wondered why the nurses were looking her way and frowning, but our new grandmother shrugged. She had pictures to send and people to call.

Emma Kate was doing just that when the other woman walked back over, pulled her shoulders back, and cleared her throat. “Ma’am,” the lady said. “I need you to move over and quit taking pictures of my grandchild.”

Bless it. I told Emma Kate it may have been the first time she acted plum silly over that grandbaby, but it would not be the last. Can I get a witness?

Hugs, Shellie
