Straighten Up

OKAY! On the very, very, very bottom of my list of things to do around the house is always straightening my drawers. I’m not going to sugar coat this drawer-organizing thing, but my logic has always been that I’m way too busy (and who’s going to see it) to tear into a major project like folding the shirts, underwear, sweaters, legging, shorts, tennis skirts and anything else that gets thrown in my drawers. Of course, that is not true. What is true is what my daddy always told me, “You do what you want to do.” Okay, he’s right! As always. Even though I talked a good game of wanting to organize my drawers, in reality, there were other things I wanted to do far more than that job.

Then, corona virus hit our world like a huge slap in our faces. I’m sure it’s purpose isn’t to get us to wake up to some important truths, but it did, didn’t it? And, one of those truths is, my drawer situation was out of control!! I had bathing suits in my drawer that I hadn’t worn in 20 years!!! 20 years!! Who does that??? I had multiple camp t-shirts—three of the same shirt in the same size—taking up valuable real estate in my drawers! I had tennis outfits that were so stuffed into one drawer that I had to squeeze my hand down into the drawer and push them down to even open it. I’m telling you, my drawers were a hot mess.

But no more. Corona virus, not only gave me the time, but it gave me the desire to get my drawers in shape. Slowing down and staying home more opened my eyes to this disaster happening in my own home, namely the over-stuffed chest of drawers sitting quietly in my bedroom. Yes, it’s true. I could still shut every drawer and, if visitors (back when we had some) came over, they had no idea what was lurking inside. To them, I was Martha Stewart with row and rows of perfectly folded t-shirt. But, I knew. At night, when no one was looking and I had to find a pair of pajamas or a t-shirt to sleep in, I, inevitably chose the one I wore the night before because there was no way I was going to push and shove my way to find another. Not in that mess!

So how did I do it? I had been hearing about this amazing organizer who has been everywhere– TV, internet, etc. Her name is Marie Kondo and she has truly perfected the organizing game, not just drawers, but everything. You can easily google her, but be warned, she’s fascinating to watch. There’s something soothing about her videos. I think it’s just seeing things get organized brings a level of peace to you. You might sit and watch her for hours. She is perfectly put together and a delight to watch. Here’s a link to help you get to her faster: https://konmari.com/

Anyway, I followed her folding technique which basically means you fold each item into a rectangle and then you place them standing up so every item is easily seen. Of course, this happens after you have put the 20 year old bathing suits and old t-shirts in a giveaway pile. Once I did that, I realized, I really did have room for all of my clothes. Then, the folding began. It was actually quite therapeutic to fold everything so neatly and then place it in the drawer where each item could be seen. I realized how crazy our old technique of stacking things has been. Stacking means there is no chance of seeing what is underneath without moving everything which means something is going to get messy.

If your drawers are in need of organization, this is a great time to tackle it. I promise, you will feel better when you have conquered this little part of your world. Oh, yeah, comment below if you have done this already. I would love to know how it worked for you.

Hugs, Chrys
