Pinch Pies, French Fries, and the Holy Food Chain
I scanned the livestock arena for my daughter-in-law. No sight of Carey. She was still tied up helping her older girls prepare their lambs. Pops and I were at the state fair where three of our grands were showing their lambs and I was holding a very hungry Kennedy Lee, their youngest sibling.
To hit fast forward a moment, the kids did their best last weekend, but frankly, they had a tough show this year. Harvest had been especially frantic this year with all the hurricanes we’ve seen, which meant their daddy wasn’t able to help them prepare as much as he would have liked. Kennedy’s arrival on the family scene meant their mother hadn’t been able to help them as much as she usually does, either. For the most part, the children had worked the lambs on their own. I was grateful to hear their parents reminding the grands of this and helping them manage their expectations.
I pulled the Chick fil A waffle fry in pieces to cool it off and offered the tiniest of bites to Miss Kennedy Lee. Kennedy is seven months and a new fan of table food, but I haven’t seen her eat fries, so I wasn’t totally sure this was a sanctioned meal. Kennedy, on the other hand, had no such qualms about these fine bites of waffle fry. Her sole complaint was that they weren’t coming fast enough.
Kennedy’s enthusiasm for the fries reminded me of my own daughter who had her own love affair with “pinch pies” back in the day. As I sat there breaking down her food, I was also reminded of the principle of the food chain, and just how important we moms and grandmas are in teaching our families about the Bread of Heaven.
There is great value to giving ourselves to the study of God’s word, not only for our own growth but for the nourishment of our families. While it can be difficult to articulate what we’re learning from the Scriptures, there is multiplied benefit in the practice. It’s only when we tax ourselves to chew on a passage of God’s word until we’re able to express the treasure we’ve found in it, that the life-sustaining truth we’re enjoying can become broken down bread to share with others.
Granted, the ideal situation would be for the next group to digest it and pass it on, too, but for you and for me, Rockstar, there is one big question. “Are we taking our place in this holy food chain?” If not, there’s no better time to start.
