Life to our Years

Monday Motivational: My mom will be 94 in April. She hasn’t just “made” it to 94; she’s still drives, goes to church events, family functions and kid’s sports. Even her children (including me) want to know the secret to her aging success. So, I asked her. Her words are simple. She attributes her long life to two things—genetics and being surrounded by family. She doesn’t say she ate a certain way or worked out three days a week or cut out soft drinks and carbs or avoided the sun or made sure she got eight hours of sleep and 10,000 steps. She didn’t say any of those things because she didn’t do any of those things.
Sunday morning, as I sat in our church service, I thought about mom’s words in relation to a long spiritual life. No physical life or spiritual life comes with a guarantee for longevity, but the Bible is clear about the importance of living with and loving a church family.
Maybe the real secret to a long and fulfilling life—both physically and spiritually—isn’t found in strict routines or perfect habits, but in the relationships we build and the love we share. My mom’s life is a testament to that. She’s surrounded by family, both at home and in church, and that connection has carried her through the years.
So, maybe we shift our focus. Instead of stressing over the latest health trends, let’s prioritize time with the people who lift us up. Let’s invest in our families, our church communities, and the bonds that truly sustain us. Because in the end, it’s not just about adding years to our life—it’s about adding life to our years.
