Just Hanging Around

I promised an update on my exercise program, so here it is. First of all, I’m happy to report I am still exercising. Having two partners-Korie and Mary Kate- to keep me going really helps. They also agree it helps them. It’s great to have a buddy when you take on something new. There’s a few scriptures to back up that idea, right?

So, our next crazy exercise adventure was a try at aerial yoga. Yes, I just said aerial yoga. It is yoga while hanging from a very sturdy, but you’re-still-not-too-sure hammock-looking silky, piece of fabric. This is something I had high hopes for. I was the kid who hung upside down from everything. Literally. Everything. I loved gymnastics and swings and monkey bars and cartwheels and jumping from the rope swing into the water while doing a back flip. I loved all of it. And, I loved “The Greatest Showman” when Zendaya twirls around the room hanging from a brightly colored piece of fabric. Yes, I had high hopes.

While there was a day for all of those things in my life. This is not that day. ☺

Oh, how I wish it was still 1971, when my eighteen-year-old self could hang upside down from a tree limb, but this is not that day and aerial yoga is not my game.

I don’t want to discourage you from trying it sometime, because it’s a great way to stretch and move, but beware, it requires going upside down.

Unfortunately for me, I have a few crystals loose in my ears which makes laying down an issue, going upside down is something like riding a tilt-a-whirl until you “you-know-what.” Yes, get very sick.

The ear crystal issue began in earnest on October 8, when I fell and hit my head while playing tennis. Pryor to the fall, I had some dizziness and the doctor suspects I had some crystals out, but after the fall, I think the whole crystal system collapsed! UGH! Here’s a brief explanation taken from the internet: Inside your ear are tiny crystals of calcium carbonate. You might think of them as “ear rocks.” They’re also called “otoconia.”. Sometimes the crystals come loose from their normal spot in your ear and move to other areas, including the canals in your ears that sense your head’s rotation. When you turn or change position, the clump will cause the fluid in your inner ear to slosh around after you’ve stopped moving. That creates the sense that you’re moving even though you are still.

That is why aerial yoga is not for me. However, Korie did pretty good. It was fun to watch her hang upside down while I sat on my fabric like I was on a swing in the park for forty-five minutes. Korie said it was “good exercise” but very scary at first. She even got her picture on the club’s website, but declared she was happy she was unrecognizable. I would be too.

As I said, if you get a chance, give it a try. Especially if you’re under thirty. After all, you’re only young once and, to me, thirty is young.

Our next adventure is going to be aqua yoga. It’s in the water. How bad can it be?

I’ll let you know.

Hugs, Chrys
