If God Calls

If God calls you to be a missionary, don’t stoop to be a king. ~ Anonymous
This quote with its surprise ending has adorned my guest room for years and it speaks to me every time I lay eyes on it. As we move into a new year, let’s allow the wisdom of those words to challenge us. You might be thinking there’s little chance any of us will be given a choice to become royalty in the world’s eyes any time soon. You’re right, of course. And yet, the desire for our company to be sought out and our worth to be acknowledged is ever present. While we’re quick to see this in our younger friends’ lives, we’re slower to see it in our own. I say we better own it if we hope to overcome it.
The truth is, as believers in Christ, we’re all called to be missionaries and we don’t necessarily have to travel to answer it. The Apostle Paul refers to it as the ministry of reconciliation given to all of us.
2nd Corinthians 5: 17-19 Therefore is any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new. And all things are of God, who has reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and has given to us the ministry of reconciliation. To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
Allowing ourselves to be preoccupied with the desire to be acknowledged and appreciated, looking to people to fill our cups instead of drawing from the endless resources of Christ Jesus, these things can all lead to a disconnect between that reconciling life we’re called to live and the one we’re living.
Thankfully, we can choose to ask the Lord to help us live, in the words of Oswald Chambers, “offering our utmost for His highest”, serving our families, friends, and ministries and trusting Him to meet our emotional needs. He is faithful to empower where we are yielded. Let’s stay bowed. Blessed New Year, friends! Hugs, Shellie
