Helicopter Parent: Motivational Monday
Motivational Monday: A helicopter hovered over the softball field at our summer camp—an uncommon sight. The last time we had one on campgrounds was in the 1990s when a camper’s parent landed to give the kids a tour. That time, excitement buzzed in the air. Campers begged to see inside, to meet the pilot, to snap a picture hanging out of the door.
But this time was different.
No one rushed forward with curiosity. No one asked for a picture. Instead, there was silence. Tension. Nervous glances. This time, the helicopter’s arrival wasn’t about adventure—it was about urgency. A counselor had been injured. A day of innocent play had taken a serious turn. Phone calls were made. Sirens wailed. Firefighters arrived. Then the police. And finally, a helicopter touched down on the softball field.
Life is a series of highs and lows. Around my dinner table, my grandkids often share their “highs” and “lows” for the week. But the truth is, highs and lows don’t just come in weeks—they come daily, sometimes hourly.
Yesterday, we were reminded of this delicate balance again as tornadoes tore through our country. One moment, the sky is clear; the next, chaos strikes. Yet, in every storm—both literal and figurative—God remains our steady refuge.
Psalm 46:1 assures us, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” No matter what unexpected challenges come our way, His protective hand guides us. Through every high and every low, we can lean on Him.
