Easter Crafts with the Grands
A fun and easy craft to do with the grands this Easter with a built-in devotional segue?! Win, win, and win, right?! Well, I’ve got just the thing. The grand girls and I fashioned these lambs this weekend with little effort and bonus—they lent themselves easily to a discussion on Jesus, Lamb of God. Praise Him.
Disclaimer. I didn’t create this crafting idea. I found these adorable lambs online and in so many places that I dare not credit just one, so I’m going to recap how we made them instead of the oh, so, detailed instructions in other places. Because A) I’ve discovered my grands love crafting but they lose interest if it’s too detailed and B) So, do I! LOL! Besides, I’m notorious for streamlining a process. Not that this has always proved to be a plus in my life, but it is what it is.
You’ll need: Cardboard, white yarn, black foam board, googly eyes, glue, and black pipe cleaners.
Cut out a piece of cardboard for each participant, unless you just love to hear siblings say, “When is it my turn? Hurry!” We cut ours at 3” by 5”, but I saw them in other sizes. It depends on how big a lamb you want to create.
To begin, hold one end of the yarn on your cardboard and begin to wind the yarn lengthwise around the cardboard, catching the start of the yarn and working left to right, building up the yarn. We aimed for 120 times around the cardboard, but we each lost count because we were all talking and laughing! These lambs pictured have anywhere from 110 to 130 trips around the cardboard.
Once you’re done winding, hold one half of the looped yarn so the whole thing doesn’t unwind, and gently ease the cardboard out. Next, take another piece of yard and tie it tightly around the middle of the wound yarn. Your goal is to keep the yarn in the lengthwise shape you’re created. Using scissors, clip the loops to “release” the wool. Perfect!
Use 5”-7” pieces of black pipe cleaners for the legs. Take one length of pipe cleaner, form it into a V shape, and thread it through the lamb for the front legs. Repeat for the back legs. Trace your lamb’s head on the black foam board, cut it out, and glue your googly eyes in place before gluing the head on the lamb. Seriously, have fun here. I realize I’m not giving you a pattern for the head, but we eyeballed it! The goal is to have a good time. We don’t aim at perfection and we don’t hit it, but we do laugh, a lot!
Enjoy, Rockstars, and don’t forget to celebrate the Lamb! He is worthy, and He is risen.
