The “Eyes” Have It

For today’s personal care tip, I want to look at eye lashes. They are all the rage today but take away the “r” from rage and you get “age” and that’s what keeps us mature women from having long, luxurious eyelashes. It’s a bummer, isn’t it? But truth be told, I didn’t have long, luxurious eyelashes even before the aging process, so the new secrets are great for anyone seeking the long eyelash look.

Let’s take a step back and look at why we have eyelashes in the first place, because we all know God had a plan. He doesn’t just throw out creations willy-nilly; there’s always a reason. Here we go. Eyelashes have a job. They are to keep our eyeballs moist and protect them from little things that try to get in our eyes. So, those little tuffs of hair are important! We curl them, mascara them, scratch them, pull on them, but they are there just doing their job of protecting one of our most valuable organs—our eyes.

In today’s world, eyelashes are getting way more attention for their cosmetic value than their usefulness. That’s a little sad, but it’s the truth. Who doesn’t notice eyelashes? We all do. The number of products available today to curl, lengthen, darken, thicken, etc. the appearance of eyelashes is crazy confusing to the average consumer—me! We’ll get to products later. For now, here are few fun facts I found in the world of enhancing our eyelashes.

  1. 65% of woman report using mascara (I actually thought this would be higher. I never leave the house without mascara.)
  2. 62% report using eye liner (same. Thought this would be higher.)
  3. Hair restoration procedures performed on the eyelash, eyebrow and face has increase 14.2% since 2008. (Okay, this I’m a chicken about, so haven’t tried any.)
  4. As early as the 4th century, ancient Indians began smearing their eyelashes with khol to make a person look more “lovable.” (Interesting fact.)
  5. Baby shampoo is great for gently cleaning eyelashes. (Seriously, hadn’t thought of this, but am going to start using it.)

Okay, on to products I have tried and love:

  1. I started using Latiesse, which was a prescription I got from my dermatologist, about ten years ago. I understand that now it can be ordered online. It’s usually $99.00 and last about three months if I’m remembering correctly. There are some reported side effects like darkening the skin around your eyelashes, but I never had any bad side effects and it worked great.
  2. I am now using Grand Lash. I have only used it a few weeks so I can’t give a full review as it takes about 12 weeks to really see a difference, but so far so good.
  3. Between the Latiesse and Grand Lash, I used Prime Lash. It worked just as well. The only reason I switched products is because I was wanted to test other products. So far, all the products I mentioned work equally well. Remember it will take 10-12 weeks to see results, so work on your patience skills.
  4. I am a faithful Maybelline user. I like the one in pink bottle with the black top. Simple, easy, and effective. But, I have a new granddaughter in law who created her own line of mascara called Lash Next Door and I love it. I am on the repeat customer plan, so it just comes to my door every few months. I love the way it comes off at night—no messy black under your eyes, it just rolls off. It’s got all kinds of “free of” ingredients if you care to look it up and see.
  5. Now on to fake eyelashes. Like most of you, well, some of you, I have tried false eyelashes and was not a fan. They were always uncomfortable and by the end of the night, I was ready to pull my eyeballs out!!! I have a few friends who wear them every day and I never could understand how they do it! Little did I know I would have to grow up a grandchild to help me figure this out. At my last granddaughter’s wedding, I was complaining about my lack of ability to master fake eyelash-wearing. Another granddaughter said to let her help and immediately she identified the problem. My eyes are smaller than most eyelashes, so she had to trim the edges and they fit and felt perfect!! Go Macy! I don’t wear them often and will never be an everyday wearer, but for special occasions, it’s fun to have long and thick lashes.

Well, that’s all I’ve got to say about eyelashes. This blog is longer than I intended, so weed through it and take what you like.

Hugs, Chrys
